Drain Doctor urges homeowners to treat drains with extreme caution

17 May 2018. Drains are something we take for granted until they block, causing not only disruption to a home or business, but potential risk of serious injury.  Drain Doctor, the UK’s largest full service combined commercial and domestic plumbing and drainage organisation, is urging people to be aware of the dangerous hazards they face if they attempt to carry out repairs on their drains.

Pierre Jeannes, Vice-President of Operations for Drain Doctor, said: “Drains are unsavory places to be around at the best of times, and anyone coming into contact with them, need to treat them with extreme caution and be mindful of the dangers they can bring.  Drainage problems, blocked drains and leaks in drain linings can lead to big problems unless they are addressed promptly so we strongly advise homeowners to call in the experts to do the repairs and unblock drains rather than attempting to do it yourself.

“Many people believe the most dangerous thing about drains and sewers is the potent smells that make their way into our homes and streets, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.   When household and industrial waste decays in a sewer, it forms one or more gases and some can be highly toxic and cause serious health conditions, even death.  Sadly, we have seen a recent increase in serious health condition and fatalities with people overcome by toxic fumes, such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide while trying to unblock drains.  No-one wants to be at risk of being exposed to gases of this kind.

“Unpleasant smells and pipes backing up is just the start and if you leave them unchecked you and your property could be in danger.  By taking precautions and dealing with problems at an early stage can often ward off the need for more extensive and expensive repairs later on – Drain Doctor can help reduce the chances of blockages happening in the first place.” adds Jeannes.

It is important for homeowners to recognise when to call in the drain experts as they have the expertise and knowledge to deal with all scenarios, along with their professional training and equipment.  If you sense there is a blockage, report it, and if it’s on your property, you are responsible for it.
