Preventing Blocked Drains in Autumn
With the effects of Autumn clearly on display already, it is now more important than ever to take preventative action on your drains to ensure you don’t end up with costly repair bills towards the latter part of the year.
At Drain Doctor Harlow we have been unblocking drains for a very long term, and experience tells us that October through to February is the most volatile time for your drains. Whether it is the cold freezing your external drainage, leaves clogging up your drains, or debris blocking the guttering and downpipes due to increased wind and rain.
But there are things you can do to minimise the plumbing and drainage disruption this Autumn/Winter!
Clean Up Your Drains
Unfortunately, the best way to avoid your drains being blocked up by leaves and debris is to physically remove them and responsibly dispose of them in your compost or garden waste recycling. Doing this can take just seconds every day or a few minutes each week but will save you hundreds in expensive repair bills.
Use A Drain Guard
By using a drain guard, you can catch leaves and debris that would otherwise fall into your drainage system and then systematically place the foreign objects into the garden waste bin. This is just a temporary solution however as if left for too long will become blocked and could end up causing flooding on your property.
Insulate Internal Pipes
Another issue we see at this time of year is burst pipes. There are several things that you can do to try and avoid this as much as possible:
- Open cupboard doors with exposed pipes to circulate warm air
- Let cold water drip from your taps to ensure flowing water passes through the pipe
- Maintain a constant temperature in your home
- Add insulation around pipes placed on an external wall
If the worst happens, you can always call Drain Doctor, who remain on call 24/7 throughout the Autumn and Winter months.
