Drain Care This Winter
December is right around the corner, and with that our thoughts seem to skip over Autumn and straight into Winter. You may be thinking about Christmas, snow, blankets, hot chocolates, and whacking the heating up to the max, but at Drain Doctor, we’re thinking about ways to minimise drain disruption and how we can help the people of Oxfordshire have a problem-free winter.
Here are ten tips this winter to survive winter without any drain problems:
Locate Your Stop Valve.
Usually found under the sink, this will corrode over time and can cause you major disruption if it does develop a fault. Opening and closing it every couple of weeks is one step you can take to catch any problems early.
Flush your sink.
In cold weather, small particles and debris are more likely to stick to the insides of a drain. Before using your kitchen drain, consider flushing it with some cold water to loosen up anything that may have got clogged.
No Fat, No Grease.
This is true all year round, but never more important than during cold weather. Pouring fat and oil down the sink will cause blockages over time, and in the winter, this will set quicker.
Use Hot Water Sparingly.
There is nothing better than a nice hot shower on a freezing cold day, remember that when you decide to wash up whilst a family member is having a shower. Manage your hot water over winter, and you should be able to get by without any cold and unpleasant showers!
Insulate Storage Tanks and Pipes.
Keep the heat in and the cold out. A frozen pipe is more likely to crack, and the effects may not be noticeable straight away, as is always the case, disaster will strike at the most inconvenient times, but this can be avoided.
Unblock Your Outside Drains.
The trees are now bare, that’s because all the leaves are in your drains. You’ll find your drain management easier if you can see inside, so give them a clean.
Pour Boiling Water Down The Sink.
As mentioned earlier you shouldn’t be pouring fat and oil down the sink, but we know it happens sometimes, (we’re probably guilty too!), simply pour some hot water down the sink every week or so, just to help clear any blockages that may have occurred.
Drip, Drip, Drip.
Fix your dripping tap. It encourages your pipes to freeze, it wastes water, and it is very annoying!
Keep Shower Drains Clear.
In the winter months, your shower will probably be used more, certainly, your bathtub will be used more. Therefore it is important to regularly clean the plughole and stop any blockages from forming.
