What is a 3D CCTV Drain Survey?
Having carried out CCTV drain surveys for a few years now, using specialist cameras to examine drain and sewer pipes, we recently decided to bolster our service offering with state-of-the-art 3D mapping tools.
CCTV drain surveys are an excellent way to inspect your drainage system and identify issues without the need to dig up the ground around it, which can be costly, time-consuming and very disruptive to your day-to-day.
Adding 3D scanning technology allows our expert drainage engineers to accurately map (to within 1cm) the location and dimensions of each inspection chamber, including its height above sea level. This data is then fed into our WinCan drain survey reporting software, where each chamber is given a unique reference which can be plotted on to Ordnance Survey map tiles.
Once we’ve captured the 3D inspection chamber images and plotted them, we can then carry out a full survey of all the interlinking pipes and drains that feed off the inspection chambers (or rodding points) below ground.

How Does 3D Drain Mapping Work?
At Anglia Drain Doctor, we’ve chosen to use the Trimble GNSS device to measure and plot drain locations in a 3D format.
We liaised with camera, software and GNSS satellite equipment suppliers to ensure the equipment and software would “talk to each other”, making our 3D surveying solution fully fit-for-purpose.

Our WinCan software has been configured to provide structural condition reports – based upon water regulation codes – which include photos of damaged areas, 2D and 3D maps of the drainage network, as well as the actual video footage.
Benefits of 3D Drain Scanning
The entire service can be delivered by one surveyor using a Toughbook laptop from a van kitted out to act as an office. Much like CCTV drain surveys, our 3D drain mapping service can identify problems with:
- Tree roots, blockages and other debris
- Cracked drains, leaks and burst pipes
- Oil, fat and grease build ups
- Ground movement and subsidence
The main benefit of this technique is that problems that aren’t necessarily obvious from above ground can be diagnosed quickly, accurately, cost-effectively and with minimal disruption. If an issue is detected, Drain Doctor’s trained technicians will be able to advise on the best course of action for making the drain repair and supply a quote for the work.

Paul was absolutely first class. He had already been the week before and the main drain was clear but the pipe going to it was blocked near the sink outlet so he unblocked that and now everything is fine.
