Rainwater Harvesting Systems & Installation
With environmental issues and water usage coming increasingly to the fore, more and more homeowners are exploring the potential of rainwater harvesting to optimise water usage and reduce their reliance on mains water. As British summers are getting hotter and hotter, so-called ‘grey water’ systems have the potential to reduce domestic mains water usage by 40 to 50 per cent and cut your water bill by the same amount.
What can rainwater be used for?
Rainwater harvesting creates an additional supply of water that can be used in the garden to water plants and vegetables, wash the car, clean patios and decking. It can even be used in washing machines and to flush toilets. With so many potential uses, clear environmental benefits and significant savings to be made, it’s not surprising that so many new-build developments and major refurbishment projects are including rainwater harvesting installations in their plans.
Different types of rainwater harvesting installation
There are a number of different rainwater harvesting installations that can be used to save, store and use rainwater. They can be broken down into three categories:
- Basic rainwater systems – At their very simplest, rainwater harvesting installations include stands and round water butts with a capacity of up to 400 litres. At Drain Doctor, we can also provide rainwater tanks with a greater capacity, as well as free-standing and submersible water pumps.
- Above-ground rainwater systems – Above-ground rainwater harvesting systems are known for their ease of installation and low cost. Their capacities can range from 800-litre plastic tanks all the way up to 100,000-litre steel tanks for commercial and industrial units.
- Underground rainwater systems – If the amount of space you have above ground is limited, an underground rainwater harvesting installation can be used. The disadvantage of this system is the cost, with excavation work having to be carried out, and the fact that a pump will have to be used to distribute the rainwater from the tank.

Superb work and excellent service from Paul.
Lovely polite man, great job!
Called them at 6pm yesterday to book a call for today to unblock a sewer pipe. They emailed this morning to say they were on their way; turned up bang on time. All the work and costs were explained in advance. An hour later everything was spotlessly clean and running clear. Great service. Well done guys!
Delighted with response and service provided (by Kevin) today. He took time to find out what I thought the problem was and comprehensively checked the drainage etc before setting about clearing the problem and ensuring everything was working properly. I will keep the contact details handy if I ever need work done and won't think twice about recommending Drain Doctor.
Darren from the Oxford team did a fantastic job in determining the problem (including finding a hidden drain cover, a drain not marked on bldg drawings), and resolving it quickly, efficiently and keeping me informed throughout about what he was doing. I was a little sceptical that, when booking, we wouldn’t have even a ball park estimate until the job was examined. But the eventual fixed price was built from a pricing menu and was, given the quality of service, good value. I e no hesitation in recommending Drain Doctor, and you should hope that it’s Darren that turns out.
Came out within 1 1/2hr of the call. Sorted within the hour. Great service.
Mr D Frary
