What can rainwater be used for?
Rainwater harvesting creates an additional supply of water that can be used in the garden to water plants and vegetables, wash the car, clean patios and decking. It can even be used in washing machines and to flush toilets. With so many potential uses, clear environmental benefits and significant savings to be made, it’s not surprising that so many new-build developments and major refurbishment projects are including rainwater harvesting installations in their plans.
Different types of rainwater harvesting installation
There are a number of different rainwater harvesting installations that can be used to save, store and use rainwater. They can be broken down into three categories:
- Basic rainwater systems – At their very simplest, rainwater harvesting installations include stands and round water butts with a capacity of up to 400 litres. At Drain Doctor, we can also provide rainwater tanks with a greater capacity, as well as free-standing and submersible water pumps.
- Above-ground rainwater systems – Above-ground rainwater harvesting systems are known for their ease of installation and low cost. Their capacities can range from 800-litre plastic tanks all the way up to 100,000-litre steel tanks for commercial and industrial units.
- Underground rainwater systems – If the amount of space you have above ground is limited, an underground rainwater harvesting installation can be used. The disadvantage of this system is the cost, with excavation work having to be carried out, and the fact that a pump will have to be used to distribute the rainwater from the tank.
