Many homes and businesses are not connected to mains drainage and instead have private drainage systems including septic tanks, soakaways, sewage treatment plants and cesspits. Drain Doctor has built a strong reputation for providing quality solutions to “off mains” drainage problems, regularly installing new systems and repairing existing ones.
Sewage treatment plant installation
Sewage treatment plants are the next step up from a single septic tank that can serve one or possibly a few properties. The installation of a treatment plant provides a long-term solution to many drainage disposal problems, especially where access to mains drainage is not possible and a septic tank will not meet the requirements.
The type of plant installed will depend on the amount of material to be processed. Some are one-stage plants, suitable for a single home, that require no electricity and use coco fibre to filter the waste. They need to be emptied perhaps every three years.
Other systems, suitable for more than one house and using around 10p of electricity per day, operate fault-free for years and have a very low/zero footprint.
For even larger requirements, such as a golf club or caravan park accommodating up to 250 people, a submerged aerated media system can be installed. These only need emptying every 18 months and require almost no maintenance.
A sewage treatment plant uses natural biological aerobic action to treat sewage. The solids are retained and pumped out periodically, and the water is made 97% pure. With permissions and licences, this can be discharged into a nearby watercourse or ditch. If this is not viable, it can be put into a leach field or even pumped away by tanker if that is not possible.
Accredited Apex & Vortex suppliers and installers
Drain Doctor is an accredited installer of Apex and Vortex sewage treatment plants, which have class-leading effluent quality combined with low running costs. These superb plants are British Standards approved and comply with Environment Agency standards and regulations.
With new septic tank regulations coming into force on 1 January 2020, you may be required by law to upgrade your existing system to a soakaway or sewage treatment plant. For more information on this, please don’t hesitate to contact Drain Doctor today.
Converting your septic tank
Drain Doctor is also a licensed installer of the UK’s leading septic tank conversion unit. New regulations – known as the General Binding Rules – stipulate that a septic tank must not discharge to a ditch or moving watercourse. If you own a system that does this, it must be upgraded by 1 January 2020, otherwise you may face a hefty fine.
A septic tank conversion unit effectively turns your septic tank into a small sewage treatment plant, resulting in a clean, harmless discharge that adheres to the new regulations. It will also work out cheaper than installing a brand new septic tank or drainage field, and involve a lot less digging and disruption.

Anthony James Fellows
Good but expensive.
Good and bad points with the service... Good points:
- Very prompt at replying to query.
- Able to come at a time and date that suited me.
- Good communication.
- As far as we know have sorted problem.
- Plumber friendly.
Unfortunately I would not recommend using the service as we are now having to deal with the mess that was left and are about to put our house on the market (which the plumber was aware of).
- Price changed halfway through the job.
- A lot of mess left (grey water on a large part of our garden and patio) if I had known this would be the case I would of asked them not to continue.
- Mess left in neighbours garden (grey water).
- Work not guaranteed as plumber thought he was unable to visualise inspection chamber, after discussing with my husband and reading surveyor report inspection chamber is actually in a different place (on front drive and very accessible). Also was not told work not guaranteed it was just printed on email invoice.
- Very expensive for work done.
Drain Doctor sorted out our blocked drain promptly and efficiently. We would highly recommend their services.
