How to Prevent Blocked Drains This Autumn

It hardly feels like we had a summer this year, but already leaves are falling off the trees which only means one thing… Autumn! For most people, Autumn means cosy jumpers, fresh sunny mornings, Halloween, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and the countdown to Chri… don’t say it!

For those working in the plumbing and drainage sector, Autumn means lots of blocked drains and gullies courtesy of fallen leaves and tonnes of rainfall! A build-up of leaves will often clog your drains up and reduce their ability to drain water away from your property meaning you could see flooding outside your property. More seriously, however, this flooding can emit bad odours, bring excessive moisture into your home, encourage rodents and pests onto your premises, and do unseen damage within your plumbing systems.

If your property is underneath trees you may find that leaves build up in your guttering, more likely though, you won’t notice, until it’s too late.

Tips for Preventing Blocked Drains

The best method of prevention is to be proactive with your garden maintenance. Trim branches and trees ahead of time to stop excessive amounts of leaves falling into your garden and making their way to your drains.

If you are not able to trim the trees and bushes, invest in a drain guard, they can be placed over your drain to catch debris before it goes into your drains. It does not affect the water flow and can be easily removed to help you maintain healthy drains.

Tips for Resolving Blocked Drains

The first step for tackling a blocked drain caused by leaves and debris is to roll your sleeves up and grab your recycling wheelie bin. It’s messy work but physically removing the debris will allow you to better understand whether there is a serious blockage or whether it was a minor clog.

Purchasing a specialised leaf vacuum or leaf blower will help remove the debris from your drains with little effort. Be advised though, if you use a leaf blower, you’ll still have to go around your garden to tidy up.
